APA-Accredited Online Psychology Schools

Based in Washington, D.C., the American Psychological Association is the largest scientific and professional body in its field with 150,000 members. The APA's mission is "to advance the creation, communication and application of psychological knowledge to benefit society and improve people’s lives." Many colleges and universities offer online psychology courses, but the APA does not accredit online degree programs.
  1. Accreditation

    • The APA accredits programs only at the doctoral level. There are no APA-accredited bachelor’s or master’s programs. To gain accreditation, an institution must apply to the APA Commission on Accreditation. The CoA assesses the proposal and decides whether the proposal meets CoA criteria. Schools that are successful in their application are subject to site visits at intervals of no more than five years to ensure that the quality of the school's program is maintained.

    Online courses

    • The American Psychological Association, on its website, states: "At this time there are no APA-accredited programs available that ONLY use on-line methods of instruction. Some programs may offer individual courses, but the Commission on Accreditation (CoA) does not maintain information on the courses offered or which programs might be offering them."

    Doctoral programs

    • Online doctoral programs in psychology are offered by several well-regarded and academically accredited universities, but none of those programs are APA-accredited.
