Online English Degrees

Whether you enjoy poring over literary novels, writing your own stories and studying the history of the English language or think you'd enjoy sharing your love of English with younger students, a career in the English field spans many possibilities. Many positions in the English language profession require specialized education and training, which you can find through English majors at colleges across the country. If you prefer to study online, there are a variety of degree programs, from the beginner's associate all the way up through master's degrees, that allow you to learn through distance learning from your home computer.

    • Students just beginning their education in the English field may be interested in Must University's online associate's degree in English. You can complete the program in under a year if the student attends full time, taking courses such as introduction to English linguistics, introduction to English grammar, introduction to English literature, English rhetoric and introduction to mass communication, plus general education classes including pre-calculus, human biology, world religions and art appreciation.

      Applicants may appreciate knowing that almost 90 percent of Must University students qualify for financial aid. A high school diploma or GED is required. All study materials are provided online; no textbooks are required.

    University of Illinois at Springfield

    • Earn a bachelor's degree in English from the University of Illinois at Springfield, even if you don't live in the Springfield area, through the school's online program. Coursework includes introduction to literary criticism and theory, American literature, British literature and exploring literature; you can complete the program in two to three years. Students can take general education requirements needed to complete the bachelor's degree at a local community college and then transfer to the university. Students taking the online program do not pay out-of-state tuition; the university has a special online rate.

      Applicants must have an associate's degree or a minimum of 30 credit hours of schooling with a minimum grade point average of at least 3.0, including two literature classes and two English composition courses. A statement of intent essay is also required. Students must have access to the Internet.

    Morehead State University

    • Further your education in the English field with an online master's degree in the subject from Morehead State University. Topics include linguistics, literary criticism, major American poets, technical writing and bibliography; students may elect to work on a thesis project or paper that counts for two of the required elective courses. Before graduation, all students must pass a written test, which takes place at Morehead's college site or through a local proctor at a nearby school.

      Students interested in the program must have an undergraduate degree or minor in English with a minimum grade point average in English coursework of 3.0 and higher than 400 on the verbal and quantitative sections of the Graduate Record Exam.
