2 Year Nursing Programs in Iowa

Nurses perform a wide range of tasks, including taking care of people who are sick or injured and supporting families who are dealing with illness or death. Nurses have to understand how to maintain a patient's records and follow the proper protocol when passing out medications. Training for these and other tasks requires a higher education. Iowa colleges understand what it takes to succeed, so they work hard to help students accomplish their career goals. There are several two-year nursing programs in the the state. Each can help shape a student into a qualified nursing professional.
  1. Des Moines Area Community College

    • Des Moines Area Community College established its nursing program in 1968 and has prepared many students for a career in nursing. The college's Licensed Practical Nurse and Registered Nurse program is accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission and approved by the state board of nursing. Nurses completing the program will be prepared to take the NCLEX licensing exam. The school boasts an 85% passing rate for the RN graduates. Some of the pre-nursing courses that are required include psychology, chemistry and anatomy. Program applicants must also pass the TEAS exam in order to be considered. Some of the classes that must be completed during the program include microbiology, family and health nursing, interpersonal communication and nursing seminar. Residents of the state can expect to pay $125 per credit hour. Non-residents must pay $250 per credit hour. The school has many campuses throughout the state. Its main campus is in Des Moines.

    Ellsworth Community College

    • Ellsworth Community College of Iowa Falls was established as a four-year college in 1890 and prides itself in a strong educational tradition that has lasted over 100 years. One program the school offers is the two-year Associates Degree in Nursing. The program helps guide students into a career in nursing and prepares them for the NCLEX examination. The program has limited space, and candidates are chosen based on their completion of general education classes, performance, class attendance and experience in the field. A new program class begins in June of each year. Applicants are required to have all of the necessary paperwork completed and turned in no later than March 15. The average tuition cost for a full- time student taking 12 credit hours is $1,586 per semester with an additional $204 in fees to be expected.

    Indian Hills Community College

    • Indian Hills Community College offers several health occupations programs. Its Associate Degree in Nursing program helps build students into leaders in the nursing field. Students gain skills needed to work in a variety of health-care situations and meet the needs of both patients and families. Some of the classes in the program include mental health nursing, human anatomy and pharmacology. In-state students will pay $130 per credit hour. Out-of-state students pay $195 per credit hour.
