Colleges in Northern Indiana

The Hoosier State is much more than farmland, cornfields and racetracks, which is often the way Indiana is stereotyped. Many well-known and excellent educational institutions exist throughout the entire state. If you are looking to attend school in northern Indiana, there are plenty of outstanding and well-respected options offering different curriculum and specialties.
  1. Ball State University

    • Located in Muncie, within an hour's drive of the state capital of Indianapolis, the school that David Letterman helped make famous is considered one of the Princeton Review's "Best in the Midwest." With 180 undergraduate majors and pre-professional programs and more than 100 master's and doctoral degrees available, there is something for almost everyone at this university of around 20,000 students. Ball State is known for its excellent education, telecommunications, architecture and nursing programs. More than 90 percent of the classes are taught by professors, a rare thing in large universities.

    Purdue University

    • Part of the famed Big Ten Conference with rich athletic tradition, Purdue University is a world-renowned school located within an hour's drive of Indianapolis. Boilermaker pride runs through students, faculty and alumni alike, with Neil Armstrong as one of its most famous alumni. Known for being an outstanding research university particularly strong in engineering, technology, pharmacy and the sciences, Purdue offers more than 200 undergraduate majors and more than 70 master's and doctoral programs. If you do not prefer the large college atmosphere (the main campus in West Lafayette has close to 40,000 students), there are other northern Indiana campuses for you to consider. With more than 850 student organizations in which to participate, students can find common ground with others at this sprawling university.

    University of Notre Dame

    • While Touchdown Jesus (The Basilica of the Sacred Heart), the Fighting Irish and the movie "Rudy" have all helped make the University of Notre Dame iconic in sports lore, the school is much more than just a football haven. An independent, Catholic university located in South Bend, within 90 miles of Chicago, Notre Dame is consistently ranked highly among educational institutions. Admission is highly competitive to this school, with approximately five applicants for each freshman class position, according to its website. There are four colleges within the university: Arts and Letters, Science, Engineering and the Mendoza College of Business. In addition, there is a highly acclaimed law school and graduate school for those wishing to pursue higher degrees. Both Regis Philbin and Condoleezza Rice attended this scenic and award-winning university.
