The Muncie, Indiana-based Ball State University may be best known as the alma mater of David Letterman. Ball State is 30 miles southwest of Portland. The university has strong programs in communications and education among its 180 different major courses of study. Other programs include all areas of business, computer technology, dietetics, exercise science, religious studies, recreation management and theater. Ball State also offers 76 different master's degree programs and 14 doctoral degrees. The university has a good reputation as a successful NCAA Division I athletic school as well.

The East Central Indiana Campus of Ivy Tech Community College is located 30 miles southwest of Portland in Muncie. Its John Jay Center for Learning offers some of the courses at its location in Portland. Students at John Jay can pick up general education credits in the sciences, math and English. They can also work on an associate's degree in business through Indiana Wesleyan University and get support for online bachelor's and master's degrees in business. At Ivy Tech's Muncie campus, students can pursue associate's degrees in engineering, education, business, health science, criminal justice and technology among that school's available major courses of study.

Taylor University, which sits about 30 miles west of Portland in Upland, Indiana is also an option for local students. Taylor University is a Christian college that offers degrees in more than 100 major programs of study. The university was founded in 1846 as a women's college. Today, degree programs are available in business, economics, natural and applied sciences, liberal arts, biblical studies, art, communications and human performance.
