Portland State University, (PSU) recently received a White House award and was named to the President's Honor Roll for community Service. Students at PSU donated more than 1.3 million service hours to their community to receive the honor from the president. PSU is a state school that offers 112 undergraduate majors. Financial aid is available to attend the university and an application is available on the PSU website. The university also has a full graduate program offering graduate degrees in most of the liberal arts. Tuition and fees for undergraduates are $118.25 per credit hour for the 2009/2010 year.
PSU has a full athletics program offering football, cross country, basketball, tennis, and track and field, to name a few.

The Art Institute of Portland (AI) is a private college, and its main mission is undergraduate design education. AI has more than 45 schools throughout the country. The school is within 10 miles of Portland Airport and close to Interstate 5. AI graduates were recently featured in the TV program "Project Runway." The school in Portland is 12 blocks from the Willamette River in the middle of Portland's Pearl district surrounded by small art boutiques. Instructional programs require course work in communications, the humanities, the social sciences, the natural sciences and mathematics. Being an art school, the emphasis is on art and creativity so students should not panic about taking math and sciences courses at the institute. If students have problems with these courses the institute gives them plenty of help.
Students prepare for entry-level positions in design fields by focusing on the demands of professional practice. Degree programs at the college include both liberal education and professional education. The college considers itself an innovative center for design and a supporter of the arts. Government student loans are available. The school has more than 1,700 students enrolled. Tuition rates for the 2009/2010 academic year were $467 per credit hour.
