Colleges Near Naples, Florida

Naples is a popular retirement and vacation destination in southwest Florida, but it's also filled with young people looking to advance in their education and careers. For that reason, secondary education has become a major area of growth over the past 25 years. Since 1991, three different universities have opened their doors in this area of southwestern Florida. Two of them are in Naples and one is located in nearby Ft. Myers.
  1. Hodges University

    • Hodges was founded in 1990 as a private university then known as International College. It changed to Hodges University in May 2007. The university is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. It offers 12 different associate degrees, 11 different bachelor's degrees and eight different master's degrees. Seventeen of the university's degrees can be obtained through the school's online courses. Hodges has campuses in both Naples and nearby Ft. Myers.

    Edison State College

    • Edison State has campuses in four different southwest Florida cities, and one campus, dubbed the Collier Campus, is located in Naples. The college, named after Thomas Edison, opened in 1962 and offers an Associate in Arts, an Associate in Science and Bachelor's degrees in public safety, elementary education, math education, biology education, nursing and management. The Naples campus opened in 1992. It is located on an 80-acre site near State Road 951 and Rattlesnake Hammock Road in east Naples. As of the college's 2009-2010 school year, tuition for Florida residents equaled $89.88 per credit hour for associate program courses and $99.45 per credit hour for baccalaureate program courses. Non-Florida resident tuition ranged from $333 per credit hour to $522 per credit hour.

    Florida Gulf Coast University

    • While it is located in nearby Ft. Myers, most Naples residents consider Florida Gulf Coast University the primary hometown college, and it is the most common college for Naples high school graduates. The university opened in 1991. Since then, enrollment has soared to more than 11,000 students attending classes. Approximately 9,000 are full-time students. The university offers both undergraduate and graduate degrees. More than 50 undergraduate degrees are available. More than a dozen graduate programs are offered in areas ranging from public administration and criminal justice to social work and nursing. The sports teams are members of the Atlantic Sun Athletic Conference.

    Ave Maria University

    • This Naples school opened in 2003 with 100 undergraduate students. Today, the university has more than 500 students and 61 faculty members. The university offers degrees in biology and chemistry, economics, early Christian literature, history, literature, math and physics, philosophy, politics, music and theology. The university has full accreditation from the American Academy for Liberal Education and has applied for accreditation through the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
