Colleges in North Western Pennsylvania

Northwestern Pennsylvania, often called “The Quiet Northwest,” is made up of forests and farmlands, as well as relatively small cities in comparison to the rest of Pennsylvania. Some of its main cities include Erie, Warren, Franklin, Clark and Brookville in the counties of Erie, Clarion, Crawford, Forest, Lawrence, Mercer, Venango and Warren. Many colleges in the region support a specific religion and encourage religious commitment from their students.

    • Mercyhurst College is a four-year accredited Catholic institution located in the city of Erie. They offer 50 undergraduate majors, 67 different concentrations and six graduate programs. The school seeks to provide education rooted in the liberal arts, career preparation and dedication to service. Mercyhurst offers 85 registered clubs and organizations, a student activities council, residence hall and apartment options, scheduled events, a career services staff, and a health and counseling staff. Financial aid is available to students both through the school and federal loans, and over 95 percent of incoming freshmen receive some kind of financial aid.

    Gannon University

    • Gannon University is a Diocesan Catholic University located in Erie and offers both undergraduate and graduate programs for students in the Judeo-Christian tradition. They focus on education in the liberal arts and professional specializations. The ultimate goal is to prepare students for leadership roles in their careers, the community and in church. Students enrolling as undergraduates must apply by submitting an online application, a financial aid award application, student transcripts, a $25 application fee, and a personal statement that is no longer than a single-typed page.

    Westminster College

    • Westminster College is a liberal arts school in New Wilmington, and has been labeled as “Best in the Northeast” by The Princeton Review. The mission of the college is to help its students develop competencies and characteristics that champion the best of what humans have to offer. The school’s programs are grounded in a liberal arts focus with a complement of Judeo-Christian tradition. They offer three undergraduate degrees, including Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Music, as well as a Master of Education degree.
