The University of Houston (UH) is home to a sprawling urban campus in the city's northern business district. The institution offers a diverse number of degree tracks through their four distinct colleges: the UH College of Business, the UH College of Public Service and the UH College of Sciences and Technology. The Lone Star College system is a publicly funded two-year community college system with branches throughout Texas. Their North Harris Campus is located approximately 10 miles north of the center of Houston. The college grants associate degrees in a variety of subject matter including accounting, economics, facilities management and emergency medical services. The institution also aids high school students in college preparation and offers a wide variety of adult education programs and learning resources for Houston-area youth.

Founded in 1971, Houston Community College (HCC) offers transfer courses, corporate training and terminal degrees as well as certificate programs at several campus locations, including their Northeast and Northwest campuses. The college has more than 70 areas of study including audio and recording technology, child development and psychology. GED, adult basic education, English as a Second Language and career planning programs are also offered at HCC. The school's Associate of Applied Science degree focuses on technical occupational realms to prepare students with knowledge and training for viable long-term careers.
