Independent Studies in Houston Colleges

Houston, fourth-largest city in the United States and largest city in Texas, is home to many renowned colleges. If you live too far or are employed and unable to avail traditional on-campus higher education programs, you can make use of independent study and distance-learning programs. These programs do not require you to be present at a particular place on a particular time and can be pursued either online or through correspondence. While many Houston Colleges offer at least a few independent study programs, some of these colleges offer a wider range of accredited courses to choose from.
  1. Houston Community College System (HCCS)

    • HCCS is a college system that operates community colleges in three cities of Texas including Houston. There are six different colleges in HCCS some of which have more than one campus. Houston Community College (HCC) offers many independent study courses, most of which are delivered using the Internet, while some are delivered using DVDs. Beginning Spanish I and Beginning Spanish II with Maria Lopez as instructor are offered using DVDs as delivery method. Many of the online courses such as Principles of Management are offered by more than one instructor.

    San Jacinto College

    • San Jacinto College is a community college whose headquarters, San Jacinto College Central, is in Pasadena, Texas, and other two campuses, San Jacinto College North and San Jacinto College South, are in Houston. Two types of independent study courses -- Internet courses and hybrid courses -- are offered. Internet courses are offered totally online while hybrid courses are offered partly online and partly on-campus. A 14-week Internet course in general psychology instructed by Lara P. Rizzo is offered by San Jacinto College.

    Westwood College

    • Westwood College is an institute of higher learning with 17 campuses in six states including one in Houston. It also offers online learning options and is accredited by many national organizations including Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS). Since its establishment in 1986, more than 24,000 students have graduated from here. It offers 12 independent study degree programs including a bachelor's degree in criminal justice offered by the School of Justice of Westwood College.

    Remington College

    • Remington College is a group of privately owned higher education institutes that operates 20 campuses in many states some of which have been in operation since the 1940s. It offers online associate degree and bachelor's degree programs in various fields that can improve your skills in business, management, marketing, accounting, criminal justice and paralegal. It offers a bachelor's degree program in business administration with a total duration of 36 months.

    Lone Star College System

    • Lone Star College System is a publicly funded community college system that offers associate degree and certificate programs. With more than 69,000 credited students, it is the largest institution for higher education in Houston. Its headquarters are in The Woodlands and Montgomery County. Lone Star College--Kingwood is in the Kingwood section of Houston and have more than 7,000 accredited students. Lone Star College--Online offers two types of independent study courses -- "Online" where the entire course is offered through the Internet and "Hybrid" where a course is partly offered online and partly on-campus.
