Independent Colleges in California

California is home to a variety of highly ranked, academically rigorous private colleges, including five schools that ranked among the nation's top 35 liberal arts colleges in US News and World Report's 2010 ranking. Four of these schools belong to a consortium called the Claremont Colleges that includes five undergraduate institutions and two graduate institutions. California's independent colleges offer a wide variety of academic departments.

    • Pomona College is a private liberal arts college that was founded in 1887. Pomona is the oldest member of the Claremont Colleges, a group of five small undergraduate colleges and two graduate institutions in Claremont, California. As of 2009, about 1,500 undergraduates attended Pomona. The college offers majors and minors in 43 different academic departments. Pomona students can also take classes at the other Claremont Colleges. Pomona College tied for 6th in US News and World Report's 2010 ranking of liberal arts colleges.

    Claremont McKenna College

    • Claremont McKenna College is a private liberal arts college that was founded in 1946. The school was founded as a men's college and became coeducational in 1976. As of 2009, the school had about 1,200 undergraduates. The college offers majors in more than 40 different academic departments. Claremont McKenna is part of the Claremont Colleges, and its students can take classes at the other four undergraduate schools. Claremont McKenna College tied for 11th in US News and World Report's 2010 ranking of liberal arts colleges.

    Harvey Mudd College

    • Harvey Mudd College is a private liberal arts college and member of the Claremont Colleges that was founded in 1955. As of 2009, about 750 students attended Harvey Mudd. The college emphasizes science, engineering and mathematics, and offers degree programs in seven primary divisions, including biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics. The college also offers several five-year dual degree programs in engineering and business. Harvey Mudd College tied for 14th in US News and World report's 2010 ranking of liberal arts colleges.

    Scripps College

    • Scripps College is a private, all-female liberal arts college that was founded in 1926. Scripps is a member of the Claremont Colleges. As of 2009, about 900 undergraduates and 20 graduate students attended the college. The college offers majors and programs of study in 22 academic fields. Scripps students can also complete science majors in collaboration with neighboring Claremont McKenna and Pitzer Colleges. Scripps College tied for 25th in US News and World Report's 2010 ranking of liberal arts colleges.

    Occidental College

    • Occidental College is a private liberal arts college that was founded in 1887. As of 2009, the school had about 1,800 undergraduates. Occidental's students can choose from among 30 different academic majors. Students also have the opportunity to work toward joint degrees in collaboration with the California Institute of Technology or Columbia University. The college also offers master's programs in teaching. Occidental College tied for 33rd in US News and World Report's 2010 ranking of liberal arts colleges.
