Pittsburgh Area Colleges

Pennsylvania is home to many prominent colleges and universities. Several of these can be found in Pittsburgh and the surrounding area.
  1. Washington and Jefferson College

    • Thirty miles outside Pittsburgh, Washington and Jefferson College is one of the nation's oldest institutions of higher learning. Founded in 1781, Washington and Jefferson was recognized as a top-tier liberal arts college by "U.S. News & World Report" in 2010. Among liberal arts colleges nationwide, Washington and Jefferson ranked 92nd. The college is best known for its pre-law and pre-health programs. It also offers a wide array of degree choices, including accounting, art, biochemistry, biological physics, business administration, history, international business, international studies and engineering. An interdisciplinary studies program offers concentrations in entrepreneurial studies, film, graphic design, professional writing and rhetoric.

    Allegheny College

    • Allegheny College in Meadville was ranked 85th among liberal arts colleges in 2010 by "U.S. News & World Report." Allegheny is recognized for its interdisciplinary approach to undergraduate education. Its degree programs are divided into three major academic divisions: humanities, natural sciences and social sciences. Academic programs include art, biochemistry, environmental science, geology, modern and classical languages, music, physics and religious studies. Interdisciplinary majors include international studies, neuroscience and women's studies.

    La Roche College

    • La Roche College in Pittsburgh offers an alternative to larger universities in the city. The college was founded in 1963 as a Catholic college for women in service to the Catholic church. Since then it has become a coeducational institution with a wide variety of undergraduate degree plans and majors, including biology, computer science, criminal justice, finance, graphic and communication design, liberal studies, management, nursing, political science, performing arts and radiography. Master of science degrees are offered in nursing, human resources and health science.
