Mars Hill College is in the rural Asheville metropolitan area town of Mars Hills, just north of Asheville. Established in 1856, the private liberal arts college represents one of the oldest higher education institutions in western North Carolina. The college's academic offerings include 30 undergraduate majors across its four divisions. Concurrently, Mars Hill students can also choose from 31 minors, including interdisciplinary programs in environmental studies, regional studies, women's studies and international studies. A Baptist-affiliated college, religious activity constitutes a central part of student life at Mars College. In addition to a church youth day, fellowship groups and Christian music clubs, the college hosts weekly chapel service. Other student activities include intercollegiate and intramural sports teams, a student literary magazine and social events held throughout the school year.

Founded in 1959, Asheville--Buncombe Technical Community College is a public community and technical college. The two-year school offers more than 60 degree, diploma and certificate programs in several divisions, from allied health and arts to workforce development. In addition to the Asheville-Buncombe main campus in Asheville, the college also offers satellite sites in nearby Madison County, and in the small Buncombe County community of Enka. Students enrolled at Asheville-Buncombe can choose programs in areas like biotechnology, pastry arts or dental hygiene, each of which feature flexible day, evening and distance learning study options. Outside the classroom, students can engage in extracurricular clubs and organizations like the drama club or the Student Association of Veterinary Technicians.

West of Asheville in the rural community of Cullowhee, Western Carolina University is a public four-year university. Founded in 1889, today Western Carolina's academic catalog includes both undergraduate and graduate programs of study. From anthropology and accounting to social work and sociology, students matriculated at the university can choose among more than 200 liberal arts and professional disciplines. Each semester, Western Carolina's geographically diverse student body includes more than 9,000 registered students from the United States and overseas. Student life at the university centers on Greek organizations, fitness and recreation activities, campus ministries and cultural events. Western Carolina also hosts men's and women's NCAA Division I athletic teams.
