Decide if you are eligible to take the New Mexico GED test. You cannot be attending an accredited high school or have already obtained a diploma or GED. Candidates must be 18 years old, but special conditions may apply for students as young as 16. If you are under 18, check with the New Mexico Public Education Department to see if you qualify to take the test. Make sure you have a valid New Mexico driver's license or state-issued photo ID. You will not be able to take the test without it.
Sign up to take the test with the testing center nearest you; there are six in Albuquerque. Find the appropriate center through the Public Education Department's website and call to set up your time. Be aware that depending on which center you choose there will be a testing fee ranging from $0 to $50 per test, with varying rates for retakes.
Study for the GED exam by taking practice tests. Time yourself to make sure you are meeting the minimum requirements and pay close attention to the areas in which you find yourself struggling or spending the most time.
Practice test taking strategies. Most of the New Mexico GED test sections, with the exception of the writing portion, are 100 percent multiple choice questions. Review test taking strategies that help eliminate wrong choices to help boost your scores.
Get a good night's sleep the night before the test and make sure you eat a healthy breakfast to avoid feeling hungry during the test. Prepare the documentation to take with you; you will need a valid New Mexico photo ID and a social security card, or a credit card signed with your photo on it.
