How to Get a GED at Home in California

It's currently not possible to take a GED test at home in California (or any state, for that matter), but it is possible to study up and take practice GED tests at home to get you ready for the real test. You're eligible to take the GED test in the state of California if you are at least 17 years of age and within 60 days of your 18th birthday.

Instructions

  1. Preparation for the GED Test

    • 1

Go on line to the California Department of Education website where there is information on the GED (see References).

    • 2

Click on "Frequently Asked Questions" to familiarize yourself with the GED testing and policies.

    • 3

Click on "GED Testing Service Website" to find testing centers near you. Click on "Locate Testing Center." Enter your zip code in the required field and click "Search." Look at the page that comes up and see which testing center is near you. Write down the address and phone number. (If you're ready to take the test now, proceed to Section 2: Step 1.)

    • 4

Practice the GED by taking sample tests at home before you make an appointment for the real thing. Click on "Sample Test Questions" on the same "GED Testing Service Website". Choose each category (there are five) to get an idea where you need extra work.

    • 5

Get preparation materials from your local library or bookstore. Look for some of the certified GED preparation materials such as Kentucky Educational Television (KET), Steck-Vaughn or Paxen Learning. Practice and study using preparation materials.

Call the testing center and schedule your appointment to take the GED exam.

    • 7

State if you need any special accommodations for the test (e.g. hearing- or vision-impaired accommodations, etc.). State if you will be taking the test in English, Spanish or French (the three languages the test is offered in).

    • 8

Bring your money and a valid ID on the day of the test.

    • 9

Try to relax and feel confident. Don't put too much pressure on yourself; while it's important to pass the test, according to Education-Portal.com, statistics show that only 30 percent of people pass on their first attempt.
