Contact your state's Department of Education. This will be your first step to taking the GED for free, as some states will allow this and some states will not.
Enroll in GED courses needed in order to get a GED fee waiver. In Ohio, for example, if you take a course at a participating school, you are automatically eligible for a fee waiver.
Take the practice GED, if necessary. Some states will ask that students score a certain number on the practice test in order to qualify for a fee waiver.
Register for the GED at the appropriate time. San Diego County in California, for example, will only offer waivers to those who plan to take the GED test within 60 days of their 18th birthday.
Bring a state identification card and proof of registration to your GED testing center and take the test.
