  1. Get your GED in Western Pennsylvania

      Go to your local public library and check out a GED practice book.

      Take a practice test to see which of the five sub-areas you need to focus on: math, science, social studies, reading or writing.

      While it is not required, you should enroll in a GED study course, which is usually found for free at your local community college or adult learning center. In Pennsylvania, you can go to the Pennsylvania Department of Education's website for a complete list of Adult Basic and Literary Education (ABLE) programs. You can search and export a map and specific hyperlinks to the program closest to your location in Western Pennsylvania.

      Sign up for the GED test at one of the many designated test centers administered by the American Council of Education. Find one of the official testing centers found in Western Pennsylvania by visiting the GED Made Easy website, passged.com.

      Click on the "GED Centers Locator" button.

      Enter your zip or postal code in the "Find the nearest GED Center" search box. You will be taken to a list of the nearest test centers, where you can find a phone number and other pertinent information needed to register. Alternatively, you can also find the same information by clicking on the ABLE links found in step 2.

      Call your local test center for specific test dates, the associated fees and specific enrollment information.

      Get your confirmation date, and make sure your are well-rested, have a good breakfast and a positive attitude when you take the test.

      Pass the 7.5-hour GED test by demonstrating a skill level that meets or exceeds that demonstrated by 60 percent of graduating high school seniors. While the test is rigorous, most students who take the preparation classes, consistently study and prepare conscientiously, do rather well.
