Scholarships for Black Women in Science

Jobs in science-related professions are growing at a faster rate than those in other fields. There are several scholarship programs available for Black women who are interested in studying science in college and graduate school. Many major corporations and government agencies invest millions of dollars in these programs in order to help increase the number of minorities in science careers.
  1. Rebecca Lee M.D. Scholarship

    • The Association of Black Women Physicians administers the Rebecca Lee M.D. Scholarship program. The award is named after the first Black female physician in the nation. It is specifically for Black women who are residents of or are enrolled in a medical school in Southern California. Awards range from $1,000 to $5,000 and are based on financial need, academic performance and the commitment to the organization's community health goals. Applications can be downloaded from the ABWP website.

    African-American Women in Computer Science

    • African=American women who attend the historically Black Florida A&M University can apply for the African-American Women in Computer Science scholarship program. The program awards stipends ranging from $2,000 to $5,000 per semester for students who are computer science majors. It also runs a peer mentoring program, offers professional and career advice seminars and offers academic advisement. Students must be U.S. residents, have a minimum 2.5 GPA and show evidence of financial need.

    Marian Norby Scholarship

    • The Society for Technical Communication administers the Marian Norby Scholarship, for women who want to enhance their technical and computer skills. Applicants must be women in administrative jobs in the federal government. Awards are given for recipients to enroll in classes or a degree program in order to improve the career opportunities. A $2,500 scholarship is granted for one academic year.

    Women in Science and Engineering Scholars Program

    • Spelman College---a prestigious, historically Black college for women---sponsors the Women in Science and Engineering Scholars Program. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and Exxon Mobil fund the program. High school seniors apply for the program and must meet strict academic requirements in order to win a scholarship. The award covers 50 percent of college tuition and fees. A summer research position at a NASA is also part of the program.
