Scholarships for Women Majoring in Science

Even though women have made great strides in overcoming historical discrimination in science fields, they are still underrepresented research and administrative positions. Corporations and nonprofit industry organizations offer scholarships for women who are interested in science careers. There are funds available for undergraduate, graduate and doctoral students in a wide variety of disciplines.
  1. The Society of Women Engineers

    • The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) supports women in undergraduate and graduate programs who are studying and preparing for careers in engineering or computer science. In 2009, SWE awarded 180 scholarships of $1,000 to $10,000. Each scholarship has specific eligibility requirements, such a residency in a certain state or college status. SWE also gives two scholarships to women who are re-entering college after being out of school for more than two years. The list of all SWE awards, requirements and applications are available on SWE's website.

    Association for Women in Science

    • The Association for Women in Science (AWIS) offers scholarships to undergraduate and predoctoral students. Undergraduates can apply for two awards. One is for students studying science, technology, engineering or mathematics. The other is for students studying physics or geosciences. Up to 10 scholarships are awarded each year in the amount of $1,000 each. Freshmen are not eligible. There are four predoctoral scholarships. Recipients receive $1,000 each. Two of the scholarships are for traditional students studying science. Another is for women who have interrupted their careers to raise children. The fourth award is for a Ph.D. student who participates in mentoring other women and young girls who want to have careers in science. For all AWIS awards, students must submit an extensive application form, transcripts and recommendations.
