Scholarships for Women in Computer Science

As women make strides in the field of computer sciences, scholarships and internships have cropped up to further woman's academic development. While specific universities may offer financial awards for women within their own computer science departments, many independent scholarships are available for women pursuing computer sciences regardless of their particular affiliation.
  1. APS/IBM Research Internship for Undergraduate Women

    • Available only to undergraduate women, the American Physical Society/IBM Research Internship offers a $2,500 scholarship in addition to a paid 10 week internship at one of three IBM locations in the United States. Applicants must have sophomore or junior standing, a cumulative 3.0 GPA or above, and be studying computer sciences, engineering, mathematics, physics, or chemistry.

    AWIS Educational Awards

    • The Association for Women in Science offers a variety of scholarships for women pursuing their undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral degrees in the sciences, including computer sciences. Eligibility and monetary value differ based on award; undergraduate scholarships for computer science vary from $500 to $1,000. Applicants must be earning a degree in a STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) field, hold U.S. citizenship or attend an American university, be preparing themselves for a science-based career with a teaching or research component, and be new to the AWIS scholarship program.

    The Google Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship

    • Offered in honor of Dr. Anita Borg, founder of the Institute of Women and Technology, this scholarship offers a financial award whose value is determined by the applicant's academic record and leadership skills. This scholarship also comes with a retreat at Google headquarters in Mountain View, California for both recipients and finalists. Workshops, panels, breakout sessions and social functions will create networks of support and information among young women in computer sciences. Applicants may apply from Africa, Asia, Australia, Canada, Europe, the Middle East, New Zealand, and the United States. Eligibility requirements vary from region to region.

    Microsoft Undergraduate Scholarships

    • Available to undergraduate students studying in the United States, Mexico, or Canada, Microsoft Inc. offers scholarships to students studying computer sciences. Under-represented minorities are especially encouraged to apply; indicate that you are applying for a scholarship for women on your cover letter. Eligible applicants must maintain a 3.0 GPA and major in a computer science-related field.

    The Society of Women Engineers Scholarship Program

    • With awards totaling over $470,000 in 2009, the Society of Women Engineers offers scholarships to both undergraduate and graduate women who are studying computer sciences, engineering, chemistry, mathematics, and physics. These scholarships are for students studying at universities sanctioned by the American Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). Scholarships are also available to study at one of four universities located in Queretaro, Mexico.

    Vanguard Women in Information Technology Scholarship Program

    • The Vanguard Group Inc. offers merit-based scholarships of up to $10,000 to female students entering their junior or senior year of study in computer and information sciences. Applicants must be full-time students with a minimum 3.0 GPA at a four-year accredited university. Up to 10 awards are granted annually.
