The Women’s Research and Education Institute sponsors a special fellowship for women majoring in political science called the Congressional Fellows on Women and Education policy. Recipients receive a $1,450 monthly stipend, $750 per semester for tuition and $500 grant for health insurance. The institute strongly encourages applicants to already be enrolled in master’s or doctoral programs, because competition is strong.
The Women in Defense organization offers Horizons scholarships of up to $4,000 for women majoring in political science. Applicants must be female U.S. citizens enrolled full-time or part-time at an accredited institution with at least 60 credits completed. The organization requires applicants to demonstrate financial need, a 3.25 minimum grade point average and interest in a future career related to national security or defense.
The National Federation of Republican Women offers three $1,000 scholarships for women majoring in political science. Applicants must be female U.S. citizens who have completed 2 years of undergraduate political science, government or economics study. Past recipients may not reapply for the scholarship. The application packet requires two essays, transcripts, three recommendation letters and certification from the applicant’s home state National Federation of Republican Women president.
Some universities offer special scholarships for women majoring in political science. The University of California President’s Postdoctoral Fellowship Program offers a scholarship package including research fellowships of $40,000 to $50,000, faculty mentoring, hiring eligibility and health insurance for recipients. Applicants must reside at the campus where they have received a postdoctoral appointment, focus full-time on research and represent themselves at special events.
The Center for Women in Government and Civil Society at the University of Albany in New York offers a Fellowship on Women and Public Policy. The scholarship package includes a $9,000 stipend, academic assistance and a fellowship placement at Rockefeller College at the University of Albany. Applicants must be graduate students who have already completed 12 graduate credits with a New York State college or university.
Women majoring in political science can also apply for scholarships that permit travel as part of study and research processes. The Women’s Studies Program at Texas Christian University offers a $400 travel grant to students, including political science students, who plan to combine gender-related studies with travel. Applicants must submit a short essay, proposed travel budget and information about what they hope to accomplish during travel.
