Student Grants for Child Development Majors

A child development major is faced with many challenges, one of which is finding a means of paying for the expenses that come with attending college. Fortunately there are many forms of financial aid available to students, including student loans, scholarships and grants. Grants are funds students may receive to help cover the costs of college, such as tuition, fees and books, that do not have to be repaid. While sometimes difficult to find, grants specifically for child development majors are available.
  1. California Student Aid Commission

    • The California Student Aid Commission offers a grant to students maintaining at least a half-time enrollment status of six credit hours, with grants available for up to $2,000 per year. To be eligible, students must be working toward a degree in childhood education as well as completing requirements for a child development permit. When applying for the grant, the applicant also must sign a Service Commitment Agreement to work for one year in a licensed children's center. Applicants for this grant must attend a eligible postsecondary two- or four-year institution. Applications for this particular grant are available through the institution the applicant will be attending.

    Child Development Training Consortium

    • The Child Development Training Consortium offers Career Incentive Grants to students pursuing careers in child care/development. These grants are available to students who work in California in an eligible child care/development program, have a social security number and are seeking a new or upgraded child development permit. The career incentive grants offered are to reimburse students for out-of-pocket expenses including tuition and books. Funds are limited, so all expenses must be verified before students receive grant money. Eligible students can apply online through the consortium's website.
