Grants for Student Teaching

Student teachers and other students in nonteaching degrees are encouraged by the U.S. Department of Education to teach in high-need school districts. The department offers grants and stipends in exchange for work.

If you are a teacher who plans to enhance your teaching knowledge or an undergraduate student who wishes to pursue a teaching career, consider applying for one of the student teacher grants offered by the government and other teacher organizations and foundations.
  1. Distinguished Fulbright Awards in Teaching

    • The Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs sponsors the awarding of the Distinguished Fulbright Awards in Teaching to encourage quality instruction in the United States and abroad. The program will send qualified U.S. primary and secondary teachers to a foreign country to study for 3 to 6 months. In exchange, foreign teachers from participating countries are sent to the United States to do the same.

Awardees are given the opportunity to study in a reputable research center or university in a participating country. You can take master's degree classes and/or conduct research, seminars, classes and other teaching-related activities in the host country.

At the end of the program, you need to present a final project you have proposed during the application period. The project should engage cross-cultural discourse on teaching and may be the basis for other future teaching activities.

The grant covers tuition, board and lodging and other allowances to assist you during the program. You may also apply for professional enrichment funds which can be use to cover development and research works and the expenses for attending conferences and workshops that are related to teaching.

    Student Achievement Grants

    • The National Education Association (NEA) provides grants to public school educators, education support professionals, faculty and other education staff who are willing to contribute in the improvement of the academic performance of U.S. students in public schools and public higher-education institutions.

The NEA Foundation will give a grant worth $5,000 to fund resource materials and other expenses you may use in your professional development research and educational activity for 12 months.

All applicants must be teaching in the United States. NEA members will be preferred.

    Learning & Leadership Grants

    • Public school teachers, pubic education support professionals, faculty and staff may also apply for the NEA Foundation's Learning & Leadership Grants.

You may use the grant to fund your participation in a professional development activity, attendance to summer institutes and the conduct of action research. Such activities must improve the quality of practice, curriculum and student performance in public schools and public higher-education institutions. The activities should be based on you and your colleagues' assessment of student performance and should be integrated in the school's planning process.

The grant worth $2,000 will cover fees, travel expenses, books and other materials you need to conduct your research. This will cover your work for 12 months. Only those who are practicing in the United States are eligible.
