International Journalism Scholarships

Many and varied international journalism scholarships are available for students pursuing a university degree as well as professionals looking to go back to school. This list includes scholarships for Americans to study journalism overseas and scholarships for international students to study journalism in the U.S. and other countries. While selection criteria varies for each scholarship, competition for all of them is often fierce.
  1. The Fulbright Program

    • The Fulbright Program is available in 155 countries for students who want to pursue graduate studies. The program provides several international journalism scholarships. For instance, the Fulbright Program annually gives the Alistair Cooke Award in Journalism to a United Kingdom citizen to pursue a master's degree in journalism at a U.S. university.

    Foreign Press Association Scholarship

    • The Foreign Press Association offers scholarships to foreign graduate students of journalism in the U.S.: one for $10,000, one for $7,500 and one for $5,000 (as of 2010). The awards are intended to encourage the pursuit of a career in journalism focusing on international affairs.

    Columbia University Journalism School Fellowships

    • Columbia University in New York offers several scholarships that cover up to full tuition for international students. For example, Jack R. Howard Fellowships in International Journalism cover full tuition and living expenses for two international journalists from developing or transitional countries. To qualify for the fellowship, candidates must reside outside the U.S. and intend to return to their homeland after graduation.

    City University London Scholarships

    • Guardian Media Group, British Broadcasting Corporation, Channel 4 and many other United Kingdom organizations sponsor a variety of scholarships for students pursuing a master's degree in journalism at City University. Both UK and non-U.K. students are eligible.

    Orebro University Global Journalism Scholarships

    • Orerbro University in Sweden offers an all-expenses paid scholarship for its two-year master's degree program for journalists who want to further their knowledge and skills focusing on international news reporting. Applicants must have a bachelor's degree in a social science or humanities and have at least two years of professional journalistic experience.
