Journalism Scholarships in the United Kingdom

If you have a passion for journalism and want to study the craft in the United Kingdom, many universities offer programs to train you to become a professional. But they can be expensive. Fortunately, many and varied journalism scholarships--or bursaries, as they are also called--are available in the United Kingdom. You don't need to be British to apply for several of them.
  1. City University London Bursaries

    • Several organizations, including Channel 4 and the British Council, sponsor scholarships for students pursuing master's degrees in the university's journalism department. Both UK and non-UK students are eligible.

    Alexia Foundation Photojournalism Scholarships

    • Scholarships ranging from partial tuition to full tuition are available for both undergraduate and graduate students to study photojournalism for one semester at Syracuse University's London Program. Applicants must be full-time students at a college or university in the U.S. or abroad.

    Thomson Reuters Fellowship Programme

    • About 25 mid-career journalists from around the world receive funding to study and research their interests at Oxford University for one, two or all three terms in an academic year.

    Scott Trust Bursaries

    • The owners of Guardian Media Group offer eight scholarships each year for aspiring journalists to study for a postgraduate degree in newspaper, web or broadcast journalism. The scholarships may be used at several universities. They cover tuition fees and provide a £5,000 ($7,250) stipend for room and board. Applicants must be permanent UK residents.

    Louis Baylis Journalism Scholarship

    • Two applicants will receive a scholarship to study journalism and the possibility of a full-time job at a weekly newspaper in the UK Specifically, winners take an all-expenses paid 20-week journalism course at Highbury College, in Portsmouth. If the candidate passes the course and a vacancy exists at the Advertiser they will be employed as a trainee reporter. The newspaper will then take over their training and assist them with their final professional National Council for the Training of Journalist exams. The scholarship is open to anyone living in the area covered by the Maidenhead or Twyford Advertiser.

    Commonwealth Broadcasting Association Postgraduate Journalism Scholarships

    • Two awards, covering all university fees and providing a stipend, are available for students pursuing master's degrees in broadcast journalism at Westminster University and City University London. Applicants must be from a developing Commonwealth country.
