Grants for Students in Scotland

The Student Awards Agency Scotland (SAAS) is part of the Scottish government and is responsible for dealing with financial support for students who are living in Scotland, undertaking higher education courses throughout the United Kingdom and who meet certain eligibility requirements. The SAAS is the largest awards processing agency in the U.K., and typically deals with around 140,000 applications per year. The grant amounts stated below are current for the 2010-2011 academic year. The exchange rate for U.S. dollars is current as of June 2010.
  1. Young Students' Bursary

    • The Young Students' Bursary is a grant offered as an alternative to a student loan contribution.

One grant option available to students living in Scotland is the Young Students' Bursary. The SAAS pays the bursary instead of making a contribution to the student loan, reducing the total amount of loan the student needs to take out and consequently keeping debt to a minimum. If the student's household income is £19,310 ($28,346) or less per year, the grant amount is £2,640 ($3,875). This amount is reduced according to the level of household income, up to a maximum of £34,195 ($50,197) per year. "Household income" is the income of the student's parents or guardians.

    Independent Students' Bursary

    • Married students are classed as independent students.

The Independent Students' Bursary is offered by the SAAS on similar terms as the Young Students' Bursary, but in this case the student receives a maximum grant of £1,000 ($1,467) if household income is £19,310 ($28,346) or less per year with a maximum income cap of £34,195 ($50,197). An "independent student" is classed as a student for whom the SAAS does not expect a contribution from their parents. Typically these students are over 25 and married or living with a partner, or students whose parents are deceased.

    Travel Expenses Grant

    • Travel expenses grants are available for eligible students.

The SAAS travel expenses grant is income assessed, meaning that the size of grant received depends on the income of the student's parents, guardians, spouse or partner. If the student is living in the home of her parents or guardians while studying, a grant may be awarded of up to £811 ($1,190) per year (based on a standard 30-week course). If she is not living with her parents, the maximum grant amount available is £462 ($678) per year for daily traveling costs, plus the cost of one trip between home and college or university at the beginning and end of each study term.

    Supplementary Grants

    • Additional grants may be available directly from the college or university.

There are supplementary grants available through the SAAS for students in certain specific circumstances, including single parents, students with dependents and students with learning difficulties, disabilities or mental health issues. There may also be grants available elsewhere, such as from the college or university or the Department of Work and Pensions.
