How to Get a Student Loan Without a Cosigner

Parents are responsible for paying a portion of your college education. However, parents occasionally refuse to or are unable to pay, putting students in a difficult situation. The typical college student has neither the extensive credit history nor income to repay their loan. Due to these factors, most traditional private student loans require a cosigner. While it is difficult to find a student loan without a cosigner, particularly one with standard levels of interest, it is possible.

Apply for federal student loans. The federal government offers two loan programs for students--the Perkins and Stafford loan programs. These loans require no credit check or cosigner and are based on financial need. In order to qualify for these, you'll need to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The amount of your loan is based on your need and the cost of your school.

Talk to your school's financial aid office. Once you have the financial aid package from the school, you can discuss your options with a financial aid counselor. Let the school know if you have extenuating circumstances that prevent your parent from paying. In some cases, the school itself may be able to offer you a private loan.

Apply for a private student loan that doesn't require a cosigner. FinAid.org lists several of the most popular private loans, some of which don't require a cosigner. Read the fine print to see if you are eligible.

Attend school part time. Lenders may be wary of giving a loan to a full-time student. If you are working full time, you become a more attractive loan candidate. Having a source of steady income can help you to get a student loan to cover expenses.
