How to Get Student Loans Forgiven

Student loans are notoriously difficult to get rid of without paying them off. Even if you declare bankruptcy, you will not be able to cancel your student loans. However, there are programs that offer loan forgiveness to students who choose certain career paths. If you are interested in a career that may not have a high salary, you may qualify to have all or part of your student loans paid for.

Instructions

    • 1

Find available loan forgiveness programs that match your career interests. For example, if you are interested in volunteering, you can join the Peace Corps or AmeriCorps. If you want to work in public law, your school may forgive your loans. Check out FinAid.org in the Resources section for more ideas.

Apply to the program that offers loan forgiveness. Each program has its own requirements, but you will typically have to write a personal statement about why you want to work with the program, submit college transcripts and get letters of recommendations from teachers or community leaders.

    • 3

Meet the requirements for loan forgiveness set forth by the program. To receive loan forgiveness, you must work for the organization for a certain amount of time. Some organizations, such as AmeriCorps require you to work for 12 months before you'll receive any loan forgiveness. Others, such as groups promoting the teaching profession in underserved areas, will give you a bit more forgiveness for each year that you work.

Talk to your program coordinator about getting the funds. Once you've met the requirement, you'll have to complete the organization's application to receive the money that you deserve. Your coordinator will tell you which forms to fill out and what, if any, proof you need to submit.
