The LAEF starts accepting applications in January of each year, and has a deadline of March 15. Those who are interested must meet certain eligibility requirements, which include Colorado residency, of Hispanic heritage or an involvement with the Hispanic community, acceptance at an accredited college or university in the state of Colorado, and a grade point average of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale. Hispanic heritage means Latino, Mexican American or Puerto Rican.
Students may have to fulfill requirements (other than submitting an application) such as participating in a personal interview and submitting a personal essay. Personal essays vary by year and limit students to a word limit and theme.
The selection process is also dependent on the applicant’s academic achievement, financial need, community involvement and submitted letters of recommendation.
To receive consideration as a finalist, applicants should adhere to the requirements for the application and selection process. They can also contact LAEF for assistance on writing an effective scholarship essay or completing a successful application.

The LAEF notifies students of their selection no later than June 15 of each year, according to the Explore Health Careers website. Notifications are final and no other applicants receive acknowledgement prior to the announcement.
Students may use the funds to pay off their tuition, textbooks, fees or room and board. Applicants must also fulfill 10 hours of community service during the year they receive funding.
Every August, LAEF holds an annual celebration for scholarship participants and their families. Attendance is optional and includes food, games, entertainment and sporting events. Scholarship recipients also have the chance to meet and greet and take pictures together.
