Scholarships for Mexican American Women

According to Shirley Wells in a research article entitled "Mexican American Women: Impact of Culture and Education on Work Patterns," the two biggest factors that influence career choices of Mexican-American women are cultural values and education attainment. By 2010, the majority of the service industry jobs were filled by women of Mexican descent. To provide educational opportunity and financial resources for these woman and expand their career choices and options, scholarships are available.
  1. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Millennium Scholars

    • Bill and Melinda Gates provided $1 billion in 1999 to establish a scholarship program, creating an opportunity for gifted, financially needy minority students to reach their educational potential and dreams. There are no age or gender stipulations; however, applicants must be African American, Hispanic American, American Indian, Alaskan Native, Asian or Pacific Islander and be a citizen or permanent legal resident or national of the United States. Your grade average should be minimum 3.3 and you must be enrolling for the first time in a U.S. accredited college or university. You must have leadership experience either in community service or other academic or extracurricular activities. Financial need must be met through the criteria established by the Federal Pell Grant standards. Funding amounts vary according to financial need and the cost of tuition, fees, books and living expenses.

    The Hispanic Scholarship Fund

    • A nonprofit organization, established in 1975, the Hispanic Scholarship Fund is the largest Latino college scholarship program in the country. Between 1975 and 2008, the program awarded more than 86,000 scholarships in excess of $26.7 million. The fund is an umbrella to dozens of individual scholarships that have different criteria for applying Hispanic students. Programs are nongender specific and are sponsored by various corporations and organizations. Scholarships are available to students enrolling in community colleges, four-year colleges/universities and graduate and post-graduate programs.

    Latin American Professional Women's Association Scholarship Program

    • The scholarship is designed to assist Latin-American girls and women in attaining their college education. The Latin American Professional Women's Association awards scholarships in the amount of $500 each. The organization also has a mentoring program for young women.
