The SummerMath for Teachers (SMT) program has been offered annually by Mount Holyoke College since 1983. Prominent math-education experts and working math teachers provide lectures on topics related to mathematics education, including effectively aligning the curriculum to the standards, improving student test scores and using innovative techniques to improve math education. Teachers are also given the opportunity to practice the skills they are taught in hands-on workshops.
Each summer, the Park City Math Institute offers a three-week, intensive-study course for math educators. This residential program takes place in Princeton, NJ. Participants in the program select an area of focus from an array of math-related topics. Learning takes place in small group settings, with participants engaging in hands-on activities to both improve their math understanding and enhance their abilities to educate their students. The program offers lectures from an array of prominent individuals within the math and education fields.
The Rutgers department of education offers numerous day-long summer math programs for secondary math teachers. Thirty different workshops are offered, allowing the educator participants to choose from a host of topics and design their own professional-development program. Each workshop focuses on a different topic. Educators can select one or all of these programs.
Secondary math teachers who wish to improve their teaching knowledge and skills while working toward achieving a master's degree can participate in the Math Teacher Leadership Program, offered at the University of Northern Colorado. During this three-week program, participants engage in master's-level college courses. These courses move at an accelerated rate, allowing participants to gain the maximum amount of knowledge in the minimum amount of time. The theme of increasing student achievement is dominant throughout the program. By participating in the program, math educators earn nine master's-level credit hours toward their advanced degree.
