Texas State Assisted Colleges

In Texas there are many resources available for those wanting to attend college but facing the daunting cost of high tuition. Colleges, and other educational institutions, in Texas can accommodate students who lack the financial ability to pay for it through state-assisted grants, scholarships and loans. Students can seek out financial assistance from the Texas government.
  1. Student Aid

    • The Texas Guaranteed Student Loan Corporation provides financial aid for students attending college or university. Students fill out a free application for federal student aid (FAFSA) or Texas application for student aid (TASFA); both are accepted by many schools in Texas. The form requires the student to provide her parents' financial information, as well as annual income, taxes paid, current assets and more. It also takes into account the family size and number of students enrolled as well as the enrollment status of the student. The form is used to calculate the expected family contribution to determine how much financial aid the student should reasonably expect. Students can use the pre-application worksheet to determine how much this amount will come to (see Resources). Only students attending Texas-state colleges are eligible to apply.

    South Texas State College

    • The South Texas State College does not accept FFEL Stafford or Federal Perkins loans, rather they provide Alternative Education Loans through the Hinson-Hazlewood College Student Loan program. The student loan program is administered by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB). The program provides educational loans to students in Texas and there is no need to display financial need in order to receive the loan. The requirements are that the student must be a Texas resident and enrolled in a course of study where completion results in a certificate, associate's or higher degree. The student must meet the academic requirements set by the institution and must provide a cosigner with a good credit standing. The cosigner has to be 21 or over with a regular source of income, cannot be the borrower or the spouse of the borrower and must be a U.S. resident.

    Texas State Technical College

    • The Texas State Technical College provides financial aid for students accepted at the college. In order to receive financial assistance, students must be enrolled for a minimum of six credit hours in a program that is at least six months in length. Students must have demonstrated financial need by submitting a needs test application through FAFSA. Students must be U.S. citizens with valid social security numbers. Students may be eligible for the Federal Pell Grant program for those enrolled in less than six credit hours with a high school diploma or GED and the demonstrated ability to benefit from training at TSTC. Students with the Federal Pell Grant are not eligible to apply for the general student loan offered through FAFSA.
