Vocational Schools Near West Plains, Missouri

Located in south central Missouri, West Plains offers vocational education for its students in a variety of technical fields. These programs are geared toward students who want certification for skilled labor or professional career jobs such as nursing, welding and business. The city itself has two programs, but larger cities also offer programs. Many vocational programs also offer GED and adult education classes for continuing education.
  1. South Central Career Center

    • The South Central Career Center in West Plains, Missouri, has secondary and post-secondary programs available for students. Its programs include automotive collision, automotive technology, business technology/supervised business experience, carpentry, food service, practical nursing, computer systems management and maintenance, welding and others. Programs vary in length and hours required for certification. The nursing course is a popular choice at the Career Center, and students enrolled in this program must clock 1,596 hours in instruction and clinicals. The nursing program is a 12-month program that meets all day for four days a week. Other programs allow a secondary student to also take other typical high school class. The welding class, for instance, only meets during the typical school year and in the morning. The Career Center issues a certificate of completion after a student finishes the course. In addition, the South Central Career Center also offers adult education, literacy and GED programs.

    Missouri State University West Plains

    • The West Plains campus of Missouri State University offers several technical and vocational degrees in addition to the usual Bachelor and Master's degrees. The University has over 1,800 students enrolled in its programs on either a full-time or part-time basis. This public university also offers a nursing program, allowing students to choose between a Licensed Practical Nurse or Registered Nurse program track. Students can also receive certificates in enology, entrepreneurship, technology management and viticulture. The viticulture certification, for instance, prepares students for working in or operating a vineyard. This certificate requires 63 credit hours, 32 of which are general education requirements.

    Ozark Mountain Technical Center

    • Located a little over 40 miles away from West Plains, the Ozark Mountain Technical Center is a vocational school that's part of the Mountain Grove school district. This Center is primarily for secondary students who wish to pursue a technical trade. The Center offers study in agricultural education, business and office technology, family and consumer sciences, marketing education and industrial technology. Eleventh and twelfth grade students can also study a particular trade, such as construction and automotive repair. In addition, the Center offers continuing education for adults.
