Vocational Schools in Virginia

In addition to its four-year, traditional universities like Virginia Tech, George Mason and Old Dominion University, the state of Virginia is home to a number of vocational schools. These post-secondary institutions prepare students to enter a number of fields that range from health care to construction. Virginia's vocational schools are found throughout the state and grant diplomas, certificates and associate degrees.

    • Established in 1886, National College is a private, for-profit vocational school with locations throughout Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio and Tennessee as well as several locations in Virginia, including Bluefield, Charlottesville, Danville, Harrisonburg, Lynchburg, Martinsville and Roanoke. The school offers diplomas and associate degrees in accounting, business administration, office administration, information technology, paralegal studies, medical billing, transcription, phlebotomy, medical assisting, pharmacy technology, broadcasting and hospitality. Externships are included in most programs. National College awards more than $5 million of financial aid to its students per year and participates in federal and state financial aid programs. Tutoring and social groups are available for students. The college provides job placement assistance for all students.

    • In addition to its locations in Florida and South Carolina, private, vocational school Centura College operates branches in Alexandria, Chesapeake, Newport News, Norfolk, Richmond and Virginia Beach, Virginia. Among the school's programs of study are massage therapy, medical assisting, paralegal studies, computer networking, accounting administration, medical billing, dental assisting, practical nursing and criminal justice. Catering to working adults, Centura offers day, evening and online courses. In addition to federal and state financial aid programs, the school participates in vocational rehabilitation, veterans benefit and railroad retirement programs. Students can receive assistance with resume writing and interview preparation from the school's Career Center.

    Tidewater Tech Trades

    • Tidewater Tech Trades is a private vocational school with one location in Norfolk, Virginia. The school carries the accreditation of the Council of Occupational Education and the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia. Students at Tidewater can elect to study welding, automotive repair or heating, ventilation and air conditioning. Programs are held during day and evening hours and allow students to attend classes on a full- or part-time basis.     • A nationwide, for-profit vocational school, ITT Technical Institute has a number of branches in Virginia with locations in Chantilly, Norfolk, Richmond, Salem and Springfield. Associate degree programs vary from location to location and include software development, engineering technology, drafting, criminal justice, paralegal studies and nursing. Programs typically last two years with some courses available online. Federal and state financial aid are available for qualified students. The school's Career Services office assists students with developing a resume, preparing for interviews, communicating in the workplace and negotiating salaries.
