Vocational Schools Near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Pittsburgh is home to many national vocational schools that teach computer training, business administration, medical technology and criminal justice. Additionally, there are a number of vocational schools in the city which give students career training more specific to the needs of the area.   1. Pittsburgh Filmmakers

    • Pittsburgh Filmmakers, founded in 1971 as a media arts center, sponsors the Three Rivers Film Festival--the biggest annual festival in the region. This nonprofit offers courses in video, film and photography. They have classes in scriptwriting, pre-production, camera work, directing and producing, budgeting, sound and lighting, and editing. The school has small classes so that students can work closely with faculty. The school has three semesters each year--starting in September, January and June. Prospective students must have a high school diploma or GED to be accepted.

    Bidwell Training Center

    • Bidwell Training Center has been training Pittsburgh area students for jobs with leading Pittsburgh corporations for over 40 years. Most courses feature hands-on externships with local companies to give students practical experience during the training period. Bidwell offers an associate's degree in chemical laboratory technology--as well as diploma programs in Culinary Arts, electronic medical records, horticulture, medical claims processor, medical coder, office technology and pharmacy technology. A GED or high school diploma is necessary to apply to Bidwell. A full placement staff is available to help start your career after graduation.

    Dean Institute of Technology

    • Dean Tech has been providing vocational training for over 60 years in Allegheny County. They offer associate degrees in HVAC-R, or Electrical Technology, as well as diploma programs in building maintenance, welding and HVAC. Prospective students must have a GED or high school diploma, and high school students can apply before graduation. Financial aid is available. Day and evening classes are available. The school also rewards prior learning on a subject--applicants can apply for advanced standing and skip some of the basic courses.
