Bay Area Massage Schools

The Bay Area in California consists of large cities such as San Francisco, Oakland and San Jose. Bay area schools provide many options for people interested in a career in massage therapy.
  1. McKinnon Institute

    • The McKinnon Body Therapy Center in Oakland was established in 1973. The institute offers certificate programs that cover a wide range of massage techniques. Classes can be taken individually, or students can complete all courses within a program to obtain a certificate of completion. The school offers beginning, intermediate and advanced courses. Students may study for their own personal benefit or complete continuing education classes at the school. Complete programs range from 100 to 150 hours of study, depending on your areas of interest.

      Required coursework includes training in anatomy and physiology as well as business ethics and hygiene. A few of the massage programs offered at the institution include Swedish, Shiatsu, sports rehabilitation and deep tissue.

    San Francisco School of Massage

    • The San Francisco School of Massage is approved by the Associated Bodyworks and Massage Professionals. The school offers programs that prepare students for entry-level employment within spas, doctor's offices and fitness centers. Coursework meets the scope of the state of California regulations as well as those of San Francisco County.

      The school provides certification in Swedish massage or Zen Shiatsu. Certifications can be completed in three to six months. For students to further their massage education, the school offers additional programs that lead to other certifications, including massage therapist, bodywork therapist, Shiatsu therapist and Asian bodywork therapist. There are also massage workshops available for students who desire to learn new techniques. Workshops are usually offered over the course of a few days and require certain prerequisites and registration fees.

    National Holistic Institute

    • National Holistic Institute was established in 1979 and is accredited by the Accrediting Council for Continuing Education and Training. The school focuses the education it provides exclusively on massage therapy; the program features 720 hours of comprehensive training. Students take science courses in anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, pathology and more. Other courses as a part of the school's curriculum include aromatherapy, deep tissue, reflexology, Swedish and shiatsu.

      National Holistic Institute has its own massage clinic that is open to the public. The focus of the clinic is to practice Shiatsu and Swedish massage primarily. The clinic is designed to provide students with real-world training and experience so they are prepared to enter the workplace.

      It has five campus locations across California in San Francisco, San Jose, Emeryville, Petaluma and Los Angeles. Student have the support of the institute with employment assistance and job placement.
