Schools of Cosmetology in Florida

Florida's Board of Cosmetology provides licenses to residents working as cosmetologists. The board requires a minimum of 1,200 hours of training for a cosmetologist to become licensed. Cosmetology schools in Florida provide training that meets state requirements. Students can choose the minimum hours to receive their diplomas or choose certification in multiple areas of cosmetology. In 2008, cosmetologists earned between $20,240 and $61,370 a year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Beauty school graduates work at beauty salons, spas, health clubs and resorts.

Applicants must be at least 16 years old and have high school diplomas. If students don't have a diploma or GED, they must take the school's Wonderlic Basic Skills Test and get a 200 on the Verbal and 210 on the Quantitative sections. Students have 20 minutes to complete each section.

    North Florida Academy

    • North Florida Academy in Orange Park provides full- and part-time diploma programs for students interested in hair, skin, makeup artistry and nail care. This cosmetology school also offers a program for students who want to be instructors. Students complete the cosmetology course in approximately 34 weeks and qualify for the state licensing board exam. The instructor program provides advanced training to licensed cosmetologists. Students receive hands-on, on-site training under the supervision of a licensed instructor. North Florida Academy is an open enrollment school, meaning anyone with a high school diploma or GED can apply.

    • Boca Beauty Academy awards diplomas in cosmetology, nail technology, makeup artistry and instructor training. Cosmetology students must take classes in chemistry, biology and application techniques. Elective seminars provide instruction on hair braiding, extensions and ionic hair straightening. Students practice makeup application and hair care on live models. This school offers flexible schedules, including evening and Saturday classes. Boca Beauty Academy has an open enrollment process and accepts new students monthly. When classes fill up, applicants are places on a waiting list. The academy is licensed by the Department of Education.
