Texas has many cosmetology schools that offer classes in cosmetology. Some community colleges also offer specific classes in the study of cosmetology. The schools offer only the courses required for you to complete the hours of study to be licensed. Your school of choice may offer specific courses in aesthetics, which include massage, facials or micro-dermabrasion. Also, hair braiding, weaving or nail technology may also be offered. Each area of study has different course requirements.
To obtain your license from the Texas Board of Cosmetology, your school must report the hours completed in each course. Many cosmetology programs can be completed in less than two years while some programs in nail technology or aesthetics can be completed within six months. The schools must report your progress on a monthly basis and the state will notify you of your eligibility to take the licensing exam. Texas offers exam sites in several cities where you will need to register prior to the test.
Before selecting a cosmetology school, make sure it is licensed by the state. Reputable schools, academies or colleges will require you to have a high school diploma or GED prior to registration. No school specializing in the curriculum of cosmetology can enroll students prior to its licensing. There are certain requirements a school must meet and it is subject to inspection by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation in Austin.
Most Texas schools also offer specialized courses of study including aesthetic programs that include teaching in how to prescribe skin care regimens. Aesthetic programs also teach students how to safely perform waxing, body wraps, laser treatments, anti-aging treatments and facial massages. Many schools will also offer classes in makeup application, permanent makeup, electrolysis, barbering and instructor training for cosmetology schools. These advanced studies are in addition to a basic cosmetology license.
