Award Beauty School offers cosmetology and nail technician programs. The cosmetology program includes 1,500 hours of instruction which can be completed in under a year through day or evening courses. This program prepares students for careers as cosmetologists, cosmetics demonstrators or salon operators. The nail technician program includes 200 hours of instruction to prepare students for careers as professional nail stylists with coursework in manicures, pedicures and acrylic application. Both programs include classwork and salon practice. The programs are certified by the National Accrediting Commission of Cosmetology Arts and Sciences.
The Award Beauty School requires that all applicants be United States citizens or visa holders. They must also be high school graduates, or have permission from their high school to attend. All applicants must be 17 years or older in order to receive a cosmetology license. Applicants without a high school diploma or GED must pass an entrance exam. Classes begin the first Monday of each month and students can apply and enroll during regular business hours. The financial aid office at the school can assist students in applying for federal financial aid.
The Washington County Technical High School in Hagerstown offers a cosmetology program to prepare students for a career in cosmetology. The program offers mentoring programs for entry level students followed by an apprenticeship in a salon or spa for students who pass their classes and are recommended by their instructor. After the completion of 1,000 hours of study, students are eligible for employment and can begin work by December of their senior year. Cosmetology courses are taught by Maryland State Licensed Senior Cosmetologists and students also take traditional academic courses.
The Cosmetology Program at Washington County Technical High School is open to 11th and 12th grade students. To enroll as a junior, parents must make an appointment with the Counseling Center. Students will need proof of residency, immunization records, proof of age and a transcript. If the cosmetology program exceeds its quota, a selection process will be used to enroll the most qualified applicants. Students must satisfactorily meet all level one requirements before continuing to level two studies in a salon or spa.
