Culinary Schools in Texas

Most of the major cities in Texas, such as Austin, San Antonio, Dallas and Houston, are host to at least one culinary school. These schools train chefs in many areas of food preparation, including knife skills, flavoring and specific cooking techniques. Some schools also offer additional programs in pastry and baking arts that focus on techniques specific to the creation of desserts.
  1. Le Cordon Bleu

    • Le Cordon Bleu has campuses in Austin and Dallas. Both campuses offer the same basic curriculum and programs. Le Cordon Bleu offers three basic programs: the culinary arts program, the patisserie and baking program, and the hospitality and restaurant management program. All programs focus on a demonstration and hands-on learning philosophy. In the culinary arts program, students learn classical cooking methods, American regional and international cuisine, food science and concepts in baking and pastry. The patisserie and baking program covers artisan bread production, design and creation of chocolate and sugar showpieces, classic European pastry production and fine patisserie. In the hospitality and restaurant management program students explore theoretical and practical management approaches, wine studies, hospitality business law, food and beverage management, and all aspects of managing a restaurant, including the kitchen and dining room environments. To apply, students must submit a complete application form, application fee and proof of high school graduation or equivalent. An admissions interview is also required.

    The International Culinary Schools of the Art Institute

    • Campuses for The International Culinary Schools at the Art Institutes are located in San Antonio, Dallas, Houston and Austin. The school uses a building block philosophy that requires students to master basic cooking skills and knowledge before advancing to more specific and technical skills. All campuses offer two main programs: culinary arts and culinary management. The culinary arts program includes foundation skills and techniques, such as basic cuts and managing a menu; studies in South American, African, Middle Eastern, Eastern Europe and Asian cuisines; classical cuisines and techniques; American dishes and indigenous ingredients; specialties in baking and pastry; and garde manger and a la carte. The culinary management program begins with the basic cooking fundamentals of the culinary arts program and proceeds to teach entrepreneurial and managerial skills that include training, leadership, motivation, management, human resources, technology, accounting, marketing and customer relations.     Culinary Academy of Austin

    • Located in Austin, Texas, the Culinary Academy of Austin uses small class sizes for more individual instruction. The school offers two main programs: professional culinary arts and pastry arts. The professional culinary arts program consists of five major blocks, with each block taking three months to complete. Students are introduced to a commercial kitchen and commercial recipes, and learn various techniques and skills that are necessary to become a professional chef. The program also requires completion of a 400-hour externship. The pastry arts program prepares chefs for work in the pastry field with 618 hours of pastry and baker training. The program also requires an externship of 120 hours. Admissions requirements for the Culinary Academy of Austin include a high school diploma or GED, registration and tuition fees, CAA admissions application, application essay, goals and evaluation questionnaire, two letters of recommendation, student survey, financial aid interview and personal interview. Although not required, experience in the cooking or food service industry is encouraged.
