Dental Hygenist Schools in Texas

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook, dental hygienists clean patients' teeth and examine teeth and gums. They also discuss oral health care with patients and help keep patient records. Additionally, they may assist dentists with procedures, take X-rays and perform office administrative tasks. Dental hygienists must be licensed and typically need a certificate or degree to secure that license. The state of Texas has many dental hygienist schools.

    • The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA) offers both bachelor's degree and a master's degree programs in dental hygiene. UTHSCSA's bachelor's degree in dental hygiene requires two full academic years in upper-level classes in dental hygiene clinical skills, laboratory and theory. Students are required to satisfactorily complete specific core general education classes before they are admitted into the program. To graduate, students must take 123 total semester hours.

      UTHSCSA's master's degree program is offered online, though it does require occasional travel to the school's main campus. It is a 36 credit hour program that students can undertake on a full-time or part-time basis. According to the school's website, full-time students can expect to complete the program within two years.

    Texas Woman's University

    • The Texas Woman's University (TWU) dental hygiene program was established in 1971. TWU offers both a clinical entry-level program and an online program designed for current hygienists to earn a bachelor's degree (RDH to BSDH program).

      Students in the entry-level program must complete 120 credit hours. It is a four-year program, and students must complete general core classes in addition to dental hygiene courses. Program classes include dental and oral pathology, care for special needs patients, dental materials, research and radiology.

      The RDH to BSDH program includes courses including immunology, microbiology, genetics, pathophysiology, law and ethics, small business management and communications.

    Del Mar College-West Campus

    • Del Mar College-West Campus offers an Associate in Applied Science in dental hygiene. The program began in 1969. According to the school's website, students participate in classroom lectures and also learn about handling dental instruments, X-rays and begin working with patients during their first year.

      Del Mar College's clinic houses 24 dental units in four bays. Each as computer monitors and the college also has digital radiography equipment.
