Texas Dental Schools

To be successful in dentistry, individuals need to have good interpersonal communication, visual memory and manual dexterity. In addition, successful dentists need a strong educational foundation in dentistry. In Texas, there are three dental schools accredited by the American Dental Association (ADA). So whether perspective students live or are considering moving to Dallas, Houston or San Antonio, Texas has dental schools that will fit their needs.
  1. Dallas

    • The Texas A&M Health Science Center, located in Dallas, has been a dental education resource since 1905.

Students who attend the Doctor of Dental Surgery program receive a combination of dental education with a focus on community service and research. For instance, first year students work with state-of-the-art technology such as a dental simulation clinic that helps them prepare for clinical courses. Also, students are encouraged to pursue biomedical research.

The doctor of dental surgery (DDS) degree requires prospective students to have a minimum of 90 semester hours and Dental Admission Test (DAT) test results. The latter should be taken either the spring or summer before applying to the college. The DAT and the student's grade point average, among other factors, are used to evaluate each application.

Also, perspective students must meet secondary requirements. Thus, applicants will be interviewed by the college's admission committee.

Your application to the program may be considered more favorably if you apply early. The deadline to apply is October 1 of each year. Participate in volunteer work; include information like personal hardships you've overcome and achievements.

    San Antonio

    • The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio has a DDS program that provides students with a gradual introduction to clinical courses. In other words, students aren't thrown into working with patients in their first year of the program.

Instead, in the first year, students are in basic science courses with some clinical courses. These clinical courses increase with each year. So by the junior and senior years, students are predominately taking clinical courses. These clinical experiences include on- and off-campus rotations in oral surgery, pediatric dentistry and dental emergencies.

Admission to the DDS program is highly competitive, according to the dental school. So perspective students need to have high academic performance in their undergraduate careers, plenty of achievements and extracurricular interests.

Applicants usually apply during either the spring or summer of their junior year of college.
