    • In Baltimore, Maryland, is the University of Maryland Dental School (UMDS). The dental school is the direct descendant of the world's very first dental college from 1840, the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery. UMDS encourages students majoring in science or non-science disciplines to apply. The university offers the Doctor of Dental Surgery; Post-graduate Dental; Dental Hygiene; and admissions with advanced standing. Non-resident students pay a higher tuition than resident students. For instance, basic tuition without any added fees for the full-time Dental Hygiene Program per semester is $2,135 for a resident. Tuition for non-residents per semester is $9,075. Financial assistance is available to qualifying applicants.

    Dental Assistant Training Schools

    • Maryland has Dental Assistant Training Schools (DATS) in three locations, Annapolis, Columbia and Westminster. The schools offer the Dental Assistant Program, which provides students with knowledge and skills a dental assistant must have to work with patients and dentists. The dental program is nine weeks, with classes available in the evenings from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Students are expected to attend 8 hours per week. Tuition loans are available, and the school assists students in job placement.

    Fortis College

    • Fortis College, a branch campus of Tri-State Business Institute, offers a Dental Assistant Program and a Dental Hygiene Program. Fortis has 14 locations throughout the United States, with one being in Landover, Maryland. Financial aid as well as job placement assistance is available through Fortis College. In both dental programs, students have hands-on training. Students who complete the Dental Hygiene Program receive an academic associate degree. Interested candidates must have a high school diploma or equivalent.
