Dental technicians, often called dental assistants, assist dentists in patient care and office and laboratory duties. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, it is expected that dental technician jobs will grow by 36 percent from 2008 to 2018.     • Brookhaven College offers a full-time, accelerated, 10-week diploma program in dental assisting. Students learn dental theory and terminology, how to take dental X-rays and how to assist in chair-side procedures. In order to gain hands-on experience performing important procedures, such as taking dental impressions, students partake in externships and laboratory practice sessions. To be considered for admission to the program, students must have received the full hepatitis B vaccination series, be able to read English at the 12-grade level or higher and hold a high school diploma or general equivalency diploma (GED).

    Concorde Career Institute

    • Concorde Career Institute offers a nine month certificate in dental assisting. Students are trained in both the clinical and administrative aspects of being a dental technician. Throughout the program, students are taught how to sterilize and prepare instrument trays, process X-rays, prepare patients for treatment, conduct oral inspections and complete patient charting and insurance forms. Six weeks are spent interning at a local dentist's office prior to graduating.

    • Kaplan College is a private institution with an array of campus locations. The college's Dallas campus offers a nine month dental assisting certificate program. Throughout the course of the program, students learn about anatomy and physiology of the head and neck, how to prepare patients for care, sterilize instruments and perform X-rays. Prior to graduating from the program, students partake in a 300-hour internship at a local dentist's office.
