West Virginia Culinary Schools

Even in a struggling economy there remains a high demand for trained chefs. In West Virginia, a booming culinary scene is staffed by many graduates from the state's various culinary schools. Offering degree tracks like culinary arts associates and certificates, baking and pastry arts associates and certificates, and professional cook, institutional cook and more in diploma formats. Despite West Virginia's "country" image, these schools offer training in a variety of cooking genres.
  1. Carver Career Center

    • The Carver Career Center is located in Kanawha County near Charleston. The school offers three programs in culinary sciences. Students can spend two years in the ACF Apprenticeship Program working under a qualified chef while attending school part time. The two-year Associates of Applied Science program follows eight National Restaurant Association ManageFirst Programs. ManageFirst is a management development program created by the National Restaurant Association that equips students with the key competencies they need to begin or advance their management careers. Upon completion of the one-year program, which follows four NRA ManageFirst programs, students receive a collegiate certificate.

    West Virgina Northern Community College

    • Located in Wheeling, Northern Community College offers a two-year Associates of Applied Sciences program as well as a one-year certificate program in the culinary arts. The two-year program includes hands-on culinary training and courses in menu planning, cost control, personnel supervision and college composition classes. The setting here is a college campus so there is a variety of other activities available.

    Monongalia County Technical Education Center

    • Monongalia County Technical Education Center in Morgantown offers a two-semester program in culinary arts. Management courses are taught as is hands-on production in European and Asian cuisines. The institution also offers courses in basic and advanced baking and pastry. Students receive a collegiate certificate upon completion of the technical program.

    The International Culinary School at The Art Institute of Charleston

    • The International Culinary School at The Art Institute of Charleston offers a variety of courses from the Art of Cooking to Culinary Management. Although this school does not offer a two-year degree, students may choose what courses they wish to attend and build their own unique training. Courses offered include baking & pastry, kitchen skills, wine & spirits and management. Additional courses may also be completed online.
