Aviation Mechanic Programs

Aviation, or aircraft, mechanics are responsible for diagnosing, adjusting, repairing or overhauling aircraft assemblies and engines; this includes pneumatic and hydraulic systems. Aviation and aircraft mechanic programs educate and train students for entry into this field as mechanics for various aircraft. In order to become an aviation mechanic, students must earn at least a certificate in airframe or power plant.
  1. Redstone College

    • Redstone College offers an airframe and power plant program that prepares students to become aviation mechanics. This program is designed to be completed in as little as 18 months and leads to an associate degree upon completion. Topics covered in the program include reciprocating engines, aircraft electricity, aircraft systems, propellers and exhaust systems, aviation science and aircraft flight control and fuel systems.

    South Seattle Community College

    • South Seattle Community College offers an aviation maintenance technology program that leads to an Associate of Applied Science degree as well as a certificate in aircraft and a certificate in power plant. Required courses include basic science for aviation, basic electricity for aviation, power plant theory and maintenance, power plant systems and components, airframe systems, airframe structure and repair, advanced airframe and advanced power plant.

    San Bernardino Valley College

    • San Bernardino Valley College offers an airframe and power plant program that prepares students to become aircraft mechanics. The program consists of four certificates and an Associate of Science degree in airframe and power plant technology. The four certificates are in aviation maintenance, airframe maintenance, power plant maintenance and avionics technology. Required courses include power plant maintenance laboratory, lectures in power plant and airframe maintenance, reciprocating engine overhaul, systems and components and calculations and publications.

    Aviation Institute of Maintenance

    • The Aviation Institute of Maintenance offers several options of aviation maintenance programs. Students can pursue an Associate of Applied Science or Associate of Occupational Science degree in aviation maintenance technology; other programs include aviation maintenance technician, aviation maintenance technical engineer, airframe maintenance technician, power plant maintenance technician and avionic technician.
