Employment prospects look good for aviation mechanics, according to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics. Competition for jobs with the best pay and benefits, such as those with major airlines, will require extensive training and Federal Aviation Administration certification. Choose an aviation training school that has earned FAA certification and that will offer the training needed to achieve FAA certification in aviation maintenance. Program training should teach skills in the use of equipment found in aviation service and repair and offer a minimum of 1900 hours of classroom training. There are several excellent aviation maintenance and mechanics schools in Florida.

    • Founded in 1925, Embry-Riddle University received accreditation from the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Over 30 programs are offered including aeronautical systems maintenance, aviation maintenance science, aeronautical science, aerospace engineering and aviation. Training programs meet FAA certification requirements and are designed to teach the skills needed to acquire FAA certification as an airframe and powerplant mechanic. The university also offers classes to help students prepare for FAA certification. Earn an Associate of Science degree to prepare for FAA airframe and powerplant mechanic certification and enter the workforce, or continue your education at Embry-Riddle to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in aviation maintenance science. Grants, loans and scholarships are available for financing your education, and the possibility exists for co-op programs with major airlines and aviation services. Airframe and powerplant maintenance degree programs are offered at the Embry-Riddle Daytona Beach, Florida, campus.

    • The Aviation Institute of Maintenance offers an aviation maintenance technician training program at its school in Orlando, Florida. Available aviation programs include aviation maintenance technology, aviation maintenance technician, aviation maintenance technical engineer, airframe maintenance technician, powerplant maintenance technician and avionics technician. These programs are designed to teach the skills needed to achieve FAA certification in aviation and powerplant maintenance.

    Baker Aviation

    • The Miami-Dade County Public School System operates George T. Baker Aviation School whose aviation technician training programs are certified by the Federal Aviation Administration. The school offers an airframe maintenance technician program with instruction in flight theory, assembly and rigging, aircraft inspection, landing gear, instrument systems and more for a total of 960 clock hours of training. Their powerplant maintenance technician program, also a total of 960 hours, covers the subjects of reciprocating engine overhaul, turbine engine theory, troubleshooting, engine inspection, fuel and metering systems as well as ignition systems. The avionics program provides 2120 hours of instruction in the operation, diagnosis and repair of avionics electronic systems and components. Baker Aviation is approved to administer the oral and written exams for Federal Aviation Administration certification as an aviation airframe and powerplant technician.
