Diesel Mechanic Programs

Diesel mechanic programs prepare you for licensure as a certified diesel mechanic and train you with the skills to find success in your work. The Bureau of Labor Statistics expects employment of diesel mechanics and technicians to grow by about 6 percent through 2018. Check with universities, community colleges and technical schools in your area for accredited diesel mechanic programs.

    • WyoTech in Laramie, Wyoming, with campuses in California, Florida and Pennsylvania, offers diesel mechanic programs with specialties in applied service management, street rod and custom fabrication, trim and upholstery technology, light-duty diesel, advanced diesel, motorsports chassis fabrication and automotive-diesel combination. Courses include power trains, fluid, power and electrical systems and engine management systems and accessories. Graduates of the program begin careers in maintaining and repairing heavy equipment, maintaining trucking fleets, working for dealerships and developing and selling parts. Tuition for the program is $25,700 as of June 2010.

    Lane Community College

    • Lane Community College in Eugene, Oregon, offers a two-year associate's degree in diesel technology. The program is certified by Associated Equipment Distributors Foundation. LCC's website reports that diesel mechanics in Oregon make about $40,000 per year on average as of June 2010. The program prepares students to repair and service hydraulic, braking and electrical systems, air conditioning and diesel engines. Tuition for the program is $8,964 as of June 2010.

    South Seattle Community College

    • South Seattle Community College in Washington offers an associate's degree in diesel and heavy equipment. Students learn the skills for careers in the logging industry, RV dealerships, marinas and boat dealerships, repair shops and municipal maintenance. Tuition for the two-year program is $81 per quarter credit from one to 10 credits, $33 for 10 to 18 credits and $73 for 19 to 25 credits as of June 2010.

    New York Automotive & Diesel Institute

    • The New York Automotive and Diesel Institute offers a master truck and diesel technician program that students can complete in one year going full-time and 18 months part-time. You learn to repair and service tractors, heavy-duty construction equipment and trailers while working on equipment from the Caterpillar, Cummins and Mack corporations. Students are prepared for Automotive Service Excellence certification in all eight areas of medium and heavy truck work. Tuition for the entire program is $19,920 as of June 2010.
