But getting your foot in the door as a mechanic in the transportation industry can prove difficult without adequate training and experience.     New York Automotive and Diesel Institute

    • The New York Automotive Diesel Institute offers three programs for those seeking a career as a diesel equipment mechanic. Those looking for a quick training program can take the Certified Truck and Diesel Technician program, 10 courses covering five areas of ASE certification, which can be completed in eight months for those attending full time and 18 months for part time students. The full program, Master Truck and Diesel Technician, is comprised of 16 courses covering all eight areas required for ASE certification and can be completed in 12 months by full-time students and 18 months by those attending part-time. The third program combines the Master Truck and Diesel program with the institutes Master Automotive program consisting of 20 courses. Financial aid is available to those who qualify and the institute offers job placement assistance after completion of a program.

    Vatterott College

    • For those looking for more than just a diploma or certificate of completion for their diesel mechanic educational training, Vatterott College offers an associates degree in occupational studies at its Des Moines, Iowa and Memphis, Tennessee campuses. The program consists of a total of 91.5-quarter credit hours of theory and lab and, applied and academic general education studies. Admissions to the program require either a high school diploma or GED and the ability to lift 75 pounds. Courses in the program include diesel mechanic basics, diesel engines and fuel systems and college algebra. Upon completion of the program, students are prepared for entry-level jobs related to diesel mechanics in the transportation industry.
