Heavy Equipment Mechanic Schools

Heavy equipment mechanics are expected to have the knowledge and education to repair and maintain heavy equipment vehicles such as cranes, tractors and excavators. To enter into the heavy equipment mechanic field, you must complete either a heavy equipment mechanic or diesel technologies program.
  1. WyoTech

    • WyoTech is a technical school that focuses on providing students with mechanic training programs that range from automotive and diesel programs, to watercraft and HVAC programs. Its Advanced Diesel Technology program seeks to prepare heavy equipment mechanics through courses that focus on both hands-on training with Kenworth and Peterbilt systems and diesel technology theory. WyoTech has campuses in Florida, Wyoming, California and Pennsylvania, but also offers online programs for students that do not live near a campus.

    Universal Technical Institute

    • Universal Technical Institute's Diesel and Industrial Technology Training Program offers students the opportunity to receive their education through a combination of theoretical and hands-on learning. The program lasts 45 weeks, with classes starting every six weeks at the seven UTI campuses in six states. In addition to the core program, students can opt to receive a specialized education as a technician on either Cummins, Dalmer or International vehicles.

    Penn Foster Career School

    • The Diesel Mechanic/Heavy Truck Maintenance program at the Penn Foster Career School gives students the opportunity to receive their training from home, regardless of their location. The online program is broken down into 10 sets that include courses on "Diesel Engine Fundamentals," "Computerized Truck and Bus Systems Management" and "Truck Electricity and Electronics" and can be completed in as little as 30 weeks. Once a student has completed training, Penn Foster also offers alumni a number of career services, including resume preparation, job search help and interview preparation.

    Community Colleges/Technical Schools

    • On top of the nationwide technical schools listed above, there are hundreds of state and local community colleges and technical schools that offer heavy equipment mechanic and diesel technology programs. The details of each program varies from institution to institution, but each results in students receiving a diploma, degree or certificate that prepares them for entry into the heavy equipment mechanic industry.
